Amsterdam Attractions

Amsterdam is the capital of the Netherlands. Like every other European attraction, it is a place rich with culture, tradition, and splendor. Although it is one of the smallest cities in the world, it has a big cultural heart. Amsterdam is a city that is the proud owner of over 50 museums, that means history and culture is taken very seriously and must be preserved and protected for every reason. Perhaps the biggest attraction that Amsterdam is known for is the Van Gogh Museum. This museum pays homage to one of Amsterdam's most celebrated citizens, Vincent Van Gogh. This museum holds important pieces of art history from the 19th Century and was officially opened in the year 1973. The biggest of these, which is also the national museum, is known as Rijksmuseum. For the art lovers, this will definitely be a place to visit. There are also unusual museums like the Erotic Museum, the Torture Museum, Hash and Marijuana Museum and a Sex Museum.

Amsterdam is home to yet another well-known and somewhat different museum and this would be Madam Tussuad's Wax Museum. There you will see wax 'sports celebrities' and video archives of different videos to watch. If you would like to see life-like wax sculptures of some of the oldest names in history to 21st century pop icons like Kylie Minogue, Madonna, and Britney Spears, then this is definitely a sure stop in your trip. Amsterdam is also home to one of the biggest names in beer, Heineken. If you fancy visiting the birthplace of this frothy beauty, which changed bases, you will not regret putting this spot on your 'to-do' list. You even walk off with two Heineken drinks and a souvenir beer mug or glass.

Another interesting thing about Amsterdam is that it is a city built on water with a vast amount of canals, about 160 in total and you can take a boat ride and enjoy the sights that way. In terms of festivals, there is the Holland Festival, which is a celebration of music and dance held in June. For the more open-minded visitor there is the August Gay Festival where you will enjoy music show, parades by the gay community and boats pimped out to a ridiculous but fun degree.
